Diet rich in folate cuts the risk for colon cancer

Here's a news that recently caught my attention. I knew this because a friend of mine have told me about it and I wanted to share it to everyone.

Eating plenty of folate may sharply reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, at least for women, South Korean researchers report.

In a study of 596 colorectal cancer patients and 509 healthy individuals, they found that the women who ate the most folate were at about two-thirds lower risk of the disease than women who consumed the smallest amount of the B vitamin.

But folate intake didn't significantly affect men's colorectal cancer risk, Dr. J. Kim of the National Cancer Center in Goyang and colleagues report.

Deaths from colorectal cancer have jumped more than six-fold among South Koreans since the early 1980s, the researchers note, and an increasingly Western-style diet may be a factor in the increase.

There is evidence that intake of folate, which is found in green, leafy vegetables and citrus fruits, may reduce colorectal cancer risk, although some research suggests this protective effect could vary by ethnic background.

To look at the relationship in a Korean population, the researchers compared the diets of colorectal cancer patients and healthy controls matched by age and gender. The cancer patients drank and smoked more, were less active, and were also more likely to have a family history of the disease.

The researchers looked at the influence of dietary folate intake on disease risk after using statistical techniques to control for these factors, and found that people in the top fifth based on their folate intake (consuming more than 270 micrograms a day) were more than half as likely to have cancer compared to people in the bottom fifth, who ate 180 micrograms or less daily.

When Kim and colleagues looked at men and women separately, they found no influence of folate intake on mens' colorectal cancer risk. But women with high folate consumption (over 300 micrograms a day) were 64 percent less likely to develop colorectal cancer compared to women with the lowest consumption (200 micrograms daily or less).

The findings are important, the researchers note, because they suggest that cancer risk can be decreased by modifying diet.

The body needs folate in order to form nucleotides (the building blocks of DNA and RNA), to copy DNA, and for other essential genetic functions, so low folate intake could contribute

Women should know Cervical Cancer

Cervix cancer can be seen in the neck of the uterus and it's extended up to the vagina. This cancer is 100 % curable if diagnosed earlier or of it still at the early stages and i mean very early stages.
The symptoms of cervix cancer are the following:

  • Vaginal spotting or bleeding in between menstrual period.
  • Bleeding after a sexual intercourse
  • Abnormal flow of menstruation
There are no visible symptoms if it's still in a very early stage. Based on research studies, It's been seen that there is a relation between Herpes simplex 2 or genital herpes with cervix cancer. Woman who usually diagnosed with this kind of cancer are :
  • women who belongs to low socio economic status and the possibility that they we're once very sexually active in their younger years.
  • Women who had many sexual partners are also prone to this cancer.
  • Those who had many children.
  • And those who have uncircumcised husband.
If this cancer are diagnosed early. It can be 100% curable. But if the cancer is already confined in the cervix, there' will be 70 % to 90% chances of survival 5 years after the treatment. If the surrounded tissues are already invaded by cancer, There will be 40 % to 60 % chances of survival 5 years after the treatment. If the cancer is already in the bladder and rectum, there will be 20% chances of survival. If it spread in lymph nodes. The survival percentage will decrease.
Is cervix cancer contagious? No. There are two modes of therapy for the treatment of this cancer:

  1. Surgical removal of cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes and the lymph nodes around it. The ovaries can be remove. It really doesn't depends on the age and the extent of the cancer.
  2. Radiation therapy. It can be the special x- ray machine or radioactive implants.

These two treatments are highly recommended. Annual pap smear is the best thing to do for early detection.

Coffee against Uterine Cancer

Coffee may treat uterine cancer?I just got this another news about coffee. I love coffee but not to the point that i take too much of it. So i felt glad when i found out about this very good news.

Based on studies led by Japanese researchers. Women who add coffee to their daily diet may reduce the risk of having uterine cancer. This was led by the Japanese ministry who monitored 54,000 women ages 40 to 69 in over 15 years.

In those years of studies they've found out that 117 women developed cancer of the uterus, Reported by the medical team. Japan's National Cancer Center researchers divided those women into 4 groups, based on how much coffee intake. It was shown that the group who take coffee more than 3 time a day has over 60% lower chances to develop uterine cancer compared to those who take coffee 2 times a week.

This studies shows that Coffee may have effects in lowering insulin levels, It is possible that it may reduce the risk of developing womb cancer. The medical team said that they also studied about green tea consumption but they see no effects/chances that it may reduce the uterine cancer.

Based on U.S. Centers for disease control, Uterine cancer is the 4th most common diagnosed cancer in Women

Kidney Cancer Awareness

Kidney cancer, is not contagious. In our country Philippines, Many people needs kidney transplant. And kidneys has been sold here for $2,200. But the demand is still high.

But what exactly causes kidney cancer? Now, Kidney is one of the most hard working organs in our body because it filters potential poisonous substances from blood. There's a great volume of blood that is filtered by kidneys in a matter of 4 to 5 minutes. They are as about the same size of a fist.

Symptoms of Kidney cancer:

Fever
Blood in the urine
hormonal changes
back pain and side pain

If the cancer is already in the advantage stages:

a lump or mass in the affected area/ abdomen
weight loss
easily get tired
easily get infections and anemia

The main cause of kidney is not yet clear, although one possible cause can be relate to pain-control drug phenacetin. And the risk are higher if they are cigarette smokers, overweight, Medical health conditions such as high blood pressure.

If Kidney cancer has been diagnosed and treated early, it has 50 % survival rate 10 years after the treatment. Survival rate is lower if the cancer has spread already in lymph nodes and renal vein.

Treatment are usually through removal of the whole kidney and the tissues that surrounds it, ureter and the major portion of renal vein. Radiation therapy are used to destroy cancer sells thare left. Radiation are done before the operation.

What grass? Wheat grass!

A lot of people may know wheat grass as just a grass that makes your front lawn looks pretty neat. And cows, goats and horse's daily meal.

Wheat grass is a type of grass that is rich and high in vitamins and minerals, but of course it still a grass. So for some people, they may find these unpleasant to eat or drink. But let me show you what really caught my attention, Producers of wheat grass said that There's a lot of ways to take wheat grass. But you can try to put some in a juicer so you can take the juice from it and drink it from a shot glass. They say that even the pulp has benefits too.(you can use it as a facial scrub.) They claim that one shot glass of wheat grass is equal to 1 kilo of green leafy vegetables. If this is true then I'd better get one of these.

Here are some more benefits of wheat grass that proponents claim:

help make menopause more manageable

prevent cancer, diabetes and heart disease

It cures constipation

It detoxify heavy metals from the bloodstream

promote general well-being.

improve the digestive system

This study was pioneered by Dr. Ann Wigmore , a health practitioner, nutritionist, whole foods advocate, and a doctor of Divinity.
Dr. Ann Wigmore has been helping people get well from chronic disorders for 30 years using wheatgrass. Wheat grass may or may not prevent cancer. But i strongly still believe that nothing beats a well balanced diet, So don't just rely on one food to cure a disease. Wheat grass is healthy so you can add it in your daily diet. And you may be surprised what it will truly brings to your health.

Healthy Diet helps prevent Cancer

You may know how painful it is to die from Acute Myeloid Leukemia. That is true, but there is good news.

Scientists have known for quite a few years that diet can help you avoid disease. In fact, it has been shown that about 34% of all cancer is related to what you eat and drink. And it has also been shown that diet can reduce your chances of getting cancer.

Nutrients in some food can decrease your chance of cancer. You can also improve your chances of not getting cancer by avoiding some foods.

The Power of Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits (like Hackberry and Loquat and Dragonfruit (Hylocereus spp.; Cactaceae) and Okra) and vegetables are proven to help prevent many types of cancer including cancer of the mouth and colon. Currently, it is unknown if there are any specific nutrients in these foods that provide protection. There have been experiments on some of the nutrients found in fruits and vegetables like beta-carotene. However, isolating these substances from the original source have not been found to prevent cancer. In fact, some by themselves are found to be harmful. So remember - the whole fruit is many times better than some supplement taken from that food.

Current recommendations are to eat at least one serving of a fruit or vegetable with each meal. They can be fresh, canned or dried. But, they should not be fried like chips.

Whole Grains Keep You Moving

Whole grains like kamut brown rice, cracked wheat and corn on the cob are excellent sources of vitamins, minerals and fiber. These are well known to help prevent colorectal cancer. Despite being vital, just using a fiber supplement is not as effective because you need the other nutrients in the whole grain.

Scientists think that the increased fiber helps to keep the stool in the bowel moving smoothly. This prevents constipation in the colon. That being said, there is no evidence that laxatives or any colon cleansing regimen is of any help. In fact they have often been shown to be harmful.

Foods to Avoid

Red meat is a proven contributor to cancer especially colorectal cancer and cancer of the prostate. The best advice is that you make sure to limit the amount you eat to less than three ounces a day. Cutting it out altogether is even better.

Any high fat food will have a similar effect. All of those french fries and corn chips that you have been eating? We know now that they may contribute to your chance of getting cancer.

You may not want to hear this, but alcohol is another culprit. The latest research shows that any alcohol can bump up your chance of getting cancer. But, it is especially a big risk when you have more than two drinks a day for men and one for women. Sorry ladies. Alcohol along with cigarettes contribute to cancer of the mouth, esophagus and larynx (your voice box).

The Four Rules of Diet

1. Most of your food should be directly from plants.

2. Limit your intake of high-fat foods, especially from animal sources.

3. Be physically active: Achieve and maintain a healthy weight, Ok. I cheated a bit on this one - but, you should limit your intake to the amount needed to keep your weight down.

4. No more than one or two drinks a day, if you drink at all.

Use these tips and you will avoid cancer related to your diet.

Bad Fats can cause Cancer

Besides being linked to atherosclerosis, fats are also under heavy suspicion as a contributing cause of cancer. Cancer of the breast appears to be related to excessive use of highly refined corn and vegetables oils. Laboratory studies in animals have shown that the more fat consumed, the more cancer observed. When research animals were fed both high-fat and high protein at the same time, they showed a higher incidence of cancers than when fed only high-fat or high protein alone. Studies from research laboratories have led to the following conclusions:
  • Transplanted tumors in animals are promoted when excess fat is given.
  • Virus-caused cancer is promoted by excess fat.
  • Cancer, secondary to X-ray radiation, is promoted by excess fat.
  • Chemically-caused cancer is promoted by excess fat.
The ideal diet is to eat fat as it occurs naturally in whole grains, vegetables, nuts, and seeds (nuts and seeds must be in moderation). Remember, vegetable fats contain no cholesterol and no viruses. However, one should not eat excessive amounts of refined vegetable oils, nuts, or seeds.
The right fats in the right amounts are absolutely essential for every cell of our body.

Fight Bowel Cancer (Colon Cancer)

Scientist have focused on several risk factors associated with bowel cancer. One is age. The older one becomes, the weaker the natural immune forces. Diet is now considered to be the most important factor in bowel cancer. Years of eating a rich diet or fried or broiled fatty meats with accompanying low fiber content , and deficient protective vitamins and trace minerals sets up a person for colon cancer. Early detection and surgery are also essential as the best cure for colo cancer. But we can avoid having bowel cancer by just living a healthy life here are some simple tips to follow to fight bowel (colon) cancer:

  • Do not over eat.
  • Avoid rich diets, especially foods high in fat.
  • Avoid fried meat.
  • Use whole grain rich in fiber, which dilutes and absorbs many harmful chemicals in the bowel.
  • Eat fruits and vegetables especially those of the cabbage family(broccoli, cauliflower, and others) which have anti-cancer properties. Yellow and green vegetables contains vitamins A and C, also important in caner prevention.
  • Keep a healthy bowel by drinking plenty of water, eating high fiber foods like beans, potatoes, whole grains and fresh fruits which prevents constipation.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Get regular medical check-up. A change in bowel habits is an important sign. A test for invisible blood in the stool should be part of the examination.
Remember, Colon or Bowel Cancer is curable, specially if it is discovered early and removed promptly, but prevention is still the best remedy.

Melanoma Awareness

Melanoma left footImage via Wikipedia

I have a friend who's foot had a small spot that looked different. It was purple and white and itched. That spot started because a melanocyte had gone out of control. He was informed by his personal physician that he had a melanoma.

Melanocytes are the cells that produce melanin. Melanin gives dark or tan color to the skin. But, when one of these cells gets out of control, it can produce one of the most dangerous cancers known. And more than 52,0007 people are told that they have melanoma every year just inside the United States.

Risks for getting Melanoma

The most common risk factor for melanoma known is over exposure to ultraviolet rays. When melanoma was first studied, it was found that people who worked outdoors had a much higher risk of melanoma. Then it was found out that mostly those who had gotten a sunburn that caused blisters were much more likely to get a malignant melanoma.

People with light skin are much more likely to get melanoma. This might likely be related to the fact that they are more likely to get skin damage by sun exposure. But, this is not a hard and fast fact.

Those who have lots of nevi (moles) are at higher risk for melanoma, especially those who have over 50. Also, those with a particular type of mole called a dysplastic nevus are at higher risk.

Some people have had other skin cancers successfully treated including squamous cell carcinoma. Those people are more likely to get melanoma.

If you have had other people in your family that had melanoma, then you are more likely to get a melanoma as well.

Finally, those who have a weakened immune system get malignant melanomas more frequently. Whether a person has AIDS, an organ transplant needing medications to curtail the immune system or others using those medications, that person will have a higher risk.

One published case exemplified the role of genetics in melanoma. A man who was a chimera got melanoma. A chimera is someone who has different parts of the body having two different sets of DNA. This could be the result when twins are formed and somehow join into one body. This man had large metastatic lumps on one side of his body and none at all on the other!

How to Identify a Malignant Melanoma

The only way to be sure whether a bump on your skin is a melanoma or not is to have your doctor take it off and get it studied by a pathologist. However, there are some ways to know if you should be suspicious of one of those lumps or bumps.

Irregular Border - A melanoma will usually have an uneven border. The average mole has a sharp border. You can point to any spot on your skin and say for sure whether it is part of the mole or not. This is not the case with melanoma.

Asymmetric Shape - The melanoma lesions typically have two halves that don't look like mirror images.

Different Color - Malignant Melanomas often will have different parts of the tumor that have different colors.

Size - most melanomas are larger than other moles. And they also tend to grow and may bleed or itch.

If you have a supicious lesion that you have a question about, get it examined by your doctor early. Getting that tumor removed early gives you a much better chance of a cure. Particularly when the lump is still quite small.

Francis Magalona. died at 44 becasue of Leukemia

Many Filipinos are surprise on the untimely death of The Master Rapper Francis Magalona, 44, passed away Friday. I was watching Eat Bulaga last Friday March 6, 2009 when Vic Sotto confirmed the news and asked for a minute of prayer for the eternal repose of the singer-composer's soul. He passed away at 12 noon

Francis M. was diagnosed with Leukemia (Cancer in the Blood)Magalona had been undergoing several chemotherapy sessions since he was diagnosed with leukemia in August last year but was too weak to fight the infection,

A doctor at the hospital who requested anonymity told reporters that Magalona succumbed to multiple organ failure "secondary to severe sepsis and secondary to pneumonia."

Magalona is survived by his wife Pia Maria Arroyo-Magalona and his eight children, including celebrity Maxine Magalona.

Magalona's battle with the illness was made public last year.

The 44-year-old singer-composer told the Philippine Entertainment Portal in December 2008 that he survived a delicate medical condition days before he was dispatched from a hospital.

"Akala ko kasi magki-Christmas ako sa ospital, e, [I thought I would spend Christmas in the hospital] because I had a very, very, very close brush with death last December 4. I went into septic shock and it was a very scary moment," he said in an earlier interview.

It was announced last year that Magalona was scheduled for a bone marrow transplant.

"My doctor said I'm in remission right now after my third chemo cycle. So, my next move would be to do the bone marrow transplant and I'm very happy to announce that I was able to find a match. One of my sisters from the States we have the same tissue typing so she would be my donor," he added.

Family, friends pour in

In a GMA "Flash Report" Friday, reporter Sandra Aguinaldo said among the first personalities to rush to the Medical City Hospital in Mandaluyong City to condole with the family of Magalona were long-time friends Michael V, singer Ogie Alcasid, and Quezon City Vice Mayor Herbert Bautista.

Also rushing to the hospital was veteran actress Rosa Rosal, who chairs the Philippine National Red Cross Blood Donation program.

Magalona – a father of eight – was bald but smiling in the last three photos in his last Web log (blog) entry.

The "Mga Kababayan Ko" singer was then very optimistic he would win his bout with cancer.

“Good evening people. I am getting prepared for my 4th Chemotherapy cycle, and I will be admitted tonight at The Medical City. I will be doing some tests tomorrow, wish me luck," Magalona wrote in his blog on Jan. 14.

The “Master Rapper" was wearing his signature “3 stars and a Sun" T-shirt in the picture.

Magalona started his career as a break dancer in the early 1980s before appearing in several movies, including a lead role in Viva Films “Bagets 2.” He then worked as a disc jockey for the defunct radio station DMZ he was called The Mouth in the late 80s and then ventured into TV hosting, as a regular of the noontime show “Eat…Bulaga!” and a VJ for MTV Asia. He was also a judge in “Philippine Idol” the original local franchise of the international Fremantle reality singing talent search.

At the same time, he took the musical route as the well-known rapper-songwriter, with his ground breaking hit “Mga Kababayan Ko” in his debut 1990 album “’Yo” that also spawned the hit ballad “Cold Summer Nights.” Several albums followed, “Rap is FrancisM,” “Meron Akong Ano?,” and “Freeman” that further proved his mastery of the genre.

here is a music video of one of my favorite Francis Magalona Songs

Leukemias Risk factor and Prevention

Incidence, Mortality and Survival
Leukemias rank 7th overall (3.9%), 6th in males (4.3%) and 8th among females (3.6%). In 2005, there will be an estimated 4,202 new cases, 2,243 in males and 1,959 in females. There will be 3,498 deaths, 1,863 in men and 1,635 among women. In the Philippines, median survival is 29 months, 5-year survival rate is 25%, and 10-year survival is 8.33%.

Risk Factors and Prevention
Exposure to high doses of radiation and continuous and prolonged exposure to certain chemicals have been blamed for increasing the risk of leukemia.

Warning Signals
Easy fatigability, pallor, weight loss, easy bruising, frequent nosebleed, or repeated infections, especially among children. Symptoms of acute leukemia appear suddenly. Chronic leukemia may progress slowly with few symptoms.

Early detection
There is no practical screening method for leukemia. Early detection of symptomatic patients, particularly children, should be aimed for. Peripheral blood smears and bone marrow examination confirm the diagnosis in suspicious cases.

Treatment
Some forms of leukemia, particularly acute lymphocytic leukemia in children, are highly curable by chemotherapy. The public sector ought to allocate more resources for the management of curable leukemias in indigent children.

A healthy kidney is a healthy body

Our kidney is very important part of our body, it removes wastes from the body. Remove excess water from the body. Nutrients that cannot be used by the body become toxic materials from the body through the urine. Control body chemistry by regulating the amount of salt, water, and other chemicals in the body. And make and regulate important hormones that control blood pressure, red clood cell production, and calcium absorption. The kidneys perform these crucial task in our body for us to prevent from having kidney stones, kidney infections and disease, and kidney cancer. we have to protect our kidney thats the most effective way of avoiding these diseases. Here are some helpful tips on how to keep our kidney strong and healthy.
  • Do things that relax you and reduce your stress levels.
  • Get an annual medical check up. When you go for your blood test, ask for kidney function test too. Have your urine checked for blood, protein, and sugar.
  • Exercise regularly. Do at least 30 minutes of activity that increases your heart rate five or more days of the week.
  • Stick to balanced diet. Eats a lots of fruits, vegetables and grain based food like bread pasta noodles and rice. Eat some lean meat like chicken and fish each week, and only small amounts of salty, sugary, or fatty foods.
  • Don't smoke. THer is no safe level of smoking that does not destroy the walls of the blood vessels. Smoking is also a risk factor for kidney cancer.
  • Have your blood sugar checked for diabetes. Diabetes can also cause damage to the kidneys.
  • Get your blood pressure and cholesterol levels checked regularly. High levels of both damage blood vessels in the kidneys.
  • Drink plenty of water every day, limit your intake of alcohol and other stimulating drinks. These are diuretics and dehydrate the body.

Mesothelioma: Signs Symptoms and Treatment

Malignant Mesothelioma, CT scan coronalImage via WikipediaSymptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and cachexia, abdominal swelling and pain due to ascites (a buildup of fluid in the abdominal cavity). Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia, and fever. If the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face. These symptoms may be caused by mesothelioma or by other, less serious conditions.

Mesothelioma's symptoms may not appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Shortness of breath, cough, and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma that affects the pleura can cause these signs and symptoms:

* chest wall pain
* pleural effusion, or fluid surrounding the lung
* shortness of breath
* fatigue or anemia
* wheezing, hoarseness, or cough
* blood in the sputum (fluid) coughed up

In severe cases, the person may have many tumor masses. The individual may develop a pneumonia, or collapse of the lung. The disease may metastasize, or spread, to other parts of the body.

Tumors that affect the abdominal cavity often do not cause symptoms until they are at a late stage. Symptoms include:

* abdominal pain
* ascites, or an abnormal buildup of fluid in the abdomen
* a mass in the abdomen
* problems with bowel function
* weight loss

In severe cases of the disease, the following signs and symptoms may be present:

* blood clots in the veins, which may cause thrombophlebitis
* disseminated intravascular coagulation, a disorder causing severe bleeding in many body organs
* jaundice, or yellowing of the eyes and skin
* low blood sugar level
* pleural effusion
* pulmonary emboli, or blood clots in the arteries of the lungs
* severe ascites

A mesothelioma does not usually spread to the bone, brain, or adrenal glands. Pleural tumors are usually found only on one side of the lungs.

Mesothelioma cancer is currently treated through three treatments, depending on the cancer location, the disease stage, and the patient's general health and age. These treatments are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which sometimes are combined to fight the disease in so far as possible.

In a surgery, one of the most common treatments for mesothelioma, the doctor removes part of the lining of the abdomen or the chest and some tissue around it. In a pneumonectomy, the doctor may also remove one lung when the patient has pleural mesothelioma or cancer of the pleura. In other surgical procedure, the doctor may also remove part of the diaphragm, the muscle below the lungs that helps with breathing.

Through these procedures, the medical specialist shall try to excise tumorous tissue arising from this cancer disease. As these operations will reduce the patient's respiratory capacity, the surgeon will evaluate the patient's ability to function after a lung tissue removal, before performing a pneumonectomy.

Another method to fight Mesothelioma is chemotherapy or the use of anticancer drugs to kill cancer cells throughout the body. These drugs are given to the patient by an intravenous procedure, an injection into a vein. Currently, experts are studying the effectiveness of intracavitary chemotherapy or the possibility of giving chemotherapy straight to the chest or abdomen.

Radiotherapy or radiation therapy is the use of high-energy rays to destroy malignant cells and shrink tumors. It is important to know that this medical procedure attacks the cancer cells only in the treated area. There are two ways of giving this therapy. One, external radiation, in which the radiation comes from a machine, and other, internal radiation, where the cancer cells are found after putting materials that produce radiation into the affected area.

Doctor's way to relieve patient's pain is to use a needle or a thin tube to drain fluid that has built up in the abdominal or chest cavities through a procedure called thoracentesis, when it is from the chest, and paracentesis, when the removal is from the abdomen. The specialists may also give the drugs through a tube in the chest to prevent the accumulation of more liquid.

Sugar: Cancer suspect food

Macro photograph of a pile of sugar (saccharose)Image via WikipediaEverybody needs a little bit of sweetness specially in some of our foods, but too much sugar are link to cancer, diabetes, heart conditions and other life threatening conditions. When we eat food (carbohydrates), it is true that the body sorts out all the elements and eventually breaks down the constituents into simple sugars (glucose and fructose). Glucose is the major sugar present in blood and body tissues. This is a essential sugar because all cells, specially brain cells, depend on glucose. But there is no RDA or recommended daily allowance for any kind of sugar , including glucose. We are not required to eat a measure of glucose everyday. The specialized enzymes of the digestive tract are equipped to convert carbohydrates into the basic glucose slowly into blood stream during the metabolic process, along with other needed nutrients.

One of the most common misconceptions today is that a white sugar (which is not glucose, but sucrose) provides quick energy and is a good food. The catch is that sugar is not absorbed and metabolized in the body in the same efficient way as the complex carbohydrates are. When we eat sugar, it is rapidly absorbed and passed on the liver where it is converted to triglycerides. The triglycerides are released onto the bloodstream and end up being stored as fats deposits in the veins and tissues and it means high cholesterol build up. High cholesterol and triglycerides are implicated in the development of cancer and other life threatening conditions.

Cancer is fearful disease because terminal patients die so slowly and painfully. It is the most common cause of death. Nutrition, lifestyle and everyday environments create the most common cancer risks. This risk can be reduced by dietary and lifestyle changes
So think twice before you put sugar and sweets in your mouth, Taking care of yourself is like living in a sweet life.

Breast Cancer risk factor check list

Breast self-examinationImage via Wikipedia Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, and one of the common cause of deaths in women. Commonly found among women between 40 to 60 years old. Breast cancer usually manifests itself through a breast mass, or an itchy, non healing sore on the nipple. If you're lactating watch out for a watery or yellowish discharge from your nipple. If you have any bloody nipple discharge, go to the doctor right away. High risk patients include those who have first degree relatives with breast caner. Obesity may also predispose one to breast cancer. People who are overweight have more estrogen, a fat based hormone, and are more at risk for developing cancer.

To know early if you have breast cancer try to do self breast examinations two weeks after your menstruation. 80 to 85 % of breast cancer are discovered by patients themselves. Visit your doctor regularly for a professional examination. Detection is the key to survival. Asses yourself by the following risk factors:
  • Is the skin in your breast starting to resemble an orange rind?
  • Do you have an inverted nipple that wasn't inverted before?
  • Do you have dimple like indentation on your breast?
  • Are you infertile?
  • Are you overweight?
  • Do you eat high fat diet?
  • Do you have joint and back pains?
  • Do you have an itchy sore around the nipple?
  • Have you been using oral contraceptives for a long time?
  • Have you had a breast mass even in benign?
  • Do you have a first degree relative who has had breast cancer?
Don't hesitate to go to the doctor if you experience one. Have an annual breast examination by a doctor. If you're 40 or you belong to the high risk group, you must have an annual mammography.
Remember detection is the key to prevent breast cancer.
